Alberta Building ~ Smethwick

Client: Sandwell MBC / Acivico
Architect: Tweedale
Consulting Engineers: EC Harris LLP
Main Contractor: Balfour Beatty
Services Value: 300,000

Project Overview

The Alberta Building located on the A457 Oldbury Road in Smethwick has undergone a complete refurbishment providing a new rehabilitation centre which helps 300 people kick drug & alcohol problems. Sandwell MBC decided to relocate the existing services to the new location to make services more cost effective.

The existing building & building services were certainly in need of some TLC. The existing building housed several businesses but due to the run down state of the building the only remaining tenant was Pertemps who received help in finding a new home.

As part of the Constructing West Midlands framework agreement  Balfour Beatty were engaged as principal contractor with Coles Grant & Jones being tasked to develop the initial design proposals provided by EC Harris right through to the final delivery of the completed Mechanical, Electrical & Public Health Services (MEP) building services package to the client.

The existing services all had to be stripped back to source providing a blank canvas to receive the new installations.

The new facility provides a large new reception area coupled with a light & airy waiting area / information section. Bright new offices & a number of interview rooms are also provided along with clinical areas for treatment of patients.

The newly provided electrical services consist of Low Voltage distribution systems, small power, lighting (both internal & external), IT wiring infrastructure, fire alarm, security systems (intruder alarm, access control, CCTV & staff attack alarm system), & disabled call systems to the WC's & refuge points.

Mechanical & Public Health Services installations consist of new LPHW heating system, ventilation, hot & cold water services, above ground drainage, air conditioning system, new gas services & an automatic controls system for the aforementioned services.

Coles Grant & Jones have once again enjoyed working in partnership with the design team, Acivico & Balfour Beatty to successfully deliver another project to the end user on time & within budget.
