Moseley School Sports Facility

Client: Moseley School
Architect: BBLB Architects
Consulting Engineers: Cundall
Main Contractor: Thomas Vale
Services Value: 600,000
This project has been partially funded by a lottery contribution awarded by Sport England & Coles Grant & Jones are proud to have been once again selected by Thomas Vale Construction to provide the design, supply & installation of the turnkey Mechanical, Electrical & Public Health Building Services Package.

The mechanical & electrical infrastructure has taken into account for the future expansion of the facility into the spaces provided above the changing areas currently left vacant ready for the provision of additional classrooms. As there were a number of incumbent specialists already providing services within the existing school; systems such as CCTV, fire detection / alarm system, security alarm, access controls etc had to be fully integrated providing seamless site wide services across the whole of the school via the BMS portals.

The project was generally split into two distinct sections with the first seeing the refurbishment of dilapidated existing buildings consisting of a gymnasium & classrooms. These areas have now been brought up to acceptable standards thus breathing new life into areas which have remained unused for some time.

The second phase has seen the integration of a new large indoor sports hall with bespoke changing facilities into the existing surrounding buildings. The new facility has been constructed & provisioned with building services in accordance with Sport England stringent requirements. This is particularly significant to the lighting requirements & levels of illumination.

The whole project has been designed with an eye on energy conservation. The installation of energy meters for both mechanical & electrical services means that energy consumption can be constantly monitored.

All indoor lighting is controlled via automatic controls such as PIR (Passive Infra Red) & absence detection. As the new spots hall is multiple use  the lighting is fully dimmable & controlled from a programmable scene setting control panel. This will ensure that all activities are catered for from the high lighting levels required for sporting activities to more subdued lighting for stage performances. Specialist stage lighting has been provided within the new sports hall to enhance performances.

The space within the sports hall is naturally ventilated via roof mounted wind catchers with heat recovery measures being employed to further enhance energy conservation. With the high demand on the showering facilities all hot water is heated via a highly efficient (96%) stand alone gas fired condensing calorifier.

The external lighting is automatically controlled by a photocell / time clock arrangement to ensure that it is only energised during periods of occupation. Luminaires have been carefully selected in order to provide energy efficient lighting systems combining both low energy & LED lamp sources.

The design, selection of energy efficient equipment & the provision of high efficiency automatic controls has greatly contributed to achieving the overall BREEAM Good rating for this project & compliance with Part L 2010 Approved Document.
