Consulting Engineers: Mott MacDonald
Main Contractor: Seddon Construction
Services Value: 550,000

Ark Chamberlain Academy (formerly known as Oldknow Academy) located in the Small Heath area of Birmingham has extended its facilities by the construction of a new teaching block right in the centre of the existing buildings. The extension consists of 2 No IT intensive classrooms, 7 standard classrooms, associated welfare facilities and administrative offices.

The new extension connects onto the existing Grade 2 listed academy building by way of a full height glass atrium.

Coles Grant & Jones have worked closely with the client, consulting engineers & Seddon Construction assisting in the design development of the mechanical & electrical building services ensuring that the final installations are fully compliant with all aspects of current standards & regulations.

The existing electricity supply has been upgraded to accommodate the additional load imposed by the extension. A new MCCB panel board has been installed to re provide the supply to the existing academy & also serve the new extension. Transient Voltage Surge Protection has been added to provide an element of protection to voltage sensitive IT equipment alongside Power Factor Correction equipment which will aid in reducing the overall energy bills.

Lighting to the teaching spaces is via recessed modular luminaires & incorporates automatic dimming to areas which are afforded natural light. The latest LED technology has been utilised in other areas such as circulation routes, WCs & glass roofed atrium further reducing energy consumption.

Other electrical systems include, small power distribution, fire alarm installation integrated with the existing fire alarm system, Intruder alarm system, lightning protection installation & facilities for the disabled such as hearing induction loops, disabled WC alarm & disabled refuge call system.

The IT teaching spaces & administrative areas are located on the ground floor & it is to these areas that comprehensive ventilation & heat / cooling systems have been installed. Ventilation to rooms above ground floor level is natural via opening windows. WCs which are located at ground & second floor levels have mechanical ventilation systems.
