Services Value: Various from £450,000 to £1.5M

Following on from previous works, we have carried out the design and installation of the Mechanical, Electrical & Plumbing Services on a number of the Birmingham School refurbishment projects under the Schools Framework Scheme.

Generally, these consist of two areas of work, comprising of the remodelling and refurbishment of part of the existing areas, sometimes acting as an enabling phase for the main build, and a new building development for the purpose of providing new teaching spaces.

These can be briefly summarised as follows:

 1. Summer 2017 to Summer 2018 Beaufort & Colebourne Special School, Stechford Road, Birmingham

The works, briefly, consisted of:

a)   A new teaching block, comprising 6 new classrooms, with toilet, kitchen and laundry facilities. The building was mechanically ventilated throughout, and served by LED lighting. Special care was paid to the use of the building by less able-bodied students, and M&E services were designed and installed accordingly.

b)   The existing school entrance was remodelled to form a link to the new building, and the corresponding M&E services in this area were modified to accommodate these works.

2.Winter 2018 to Spring 2019 – Washwood Heath Academy, Burney Lane, Birmingham.

Theworks here were:

a)   A new car parking area required external lighting, this "freed up" the old car parking area, providing the necessary space for the new build. LED lighting was used to light the space for safe access for pedestrians and vehicles.

b)   A new, 15 Classroom, two storey block was built in the area at the front of the academy, previously used as car parking. The block has a large hall space, to be used for assembly functions, dining and sports, with a catering kitchen, dedicated IT space and practical works area. All spaces utilise LED lighting, and are heated by LPHW via a mixture of radiators, high level radiant panels, and LST radiators in areas used by younger students. The building was generally ventilated by hybrid nechanical ventilation fan units, providing a mixture of natural and mechanical ventilation, with natural ventilation turrets in the hall area, and dedicated mechanical supply and extract ventilation to toilet and kitchen areas.

Staff and teaching spaces are fitted with data and small power outlets as required, with domestic water services to all sanitary and catering appliances.

The project was completed by Spring 2019.

3.Winter 2018 to Spring 2019 – St. Mary’s C of E Primary Academy, Hampstead Road, Birmingham

This project comprised the following works:

a)   Modifications to existing entrance and classroom facilities, to form new temporary reception and front of building extended to provide new office accommodation and WC facilities to key staff. Reception Classroom, Studio and WC areas were all refurbished and remodelled

b)   A new 3 storey extension building, comprising 6 new classrooms, Staff Work Area & toilet facilities.

The building was generally heated and ventilated by fresh air fed fan coil units, with dedicated supply and extract ventilation to toilet areas featuring heat recovery.

Staff and teaching spaces are fitted with data and small power outlets as required, with domestic water services to all sanitary and catering appliances.

The project was completed by Spring 2019.

4.Summer 2018 to Spring 2019 Moor Hall School, Sutton Coldfield

This project comprised the following works:

a)   An extension to, and refurbishment of the existing School Hall, to provide additional accommodation.

b)   An extension to the existing Staff Kitchen area, to provide new and extended facilities, plus a new covered cycle shed for bicycle storage.

c)   A new build two storey extension, consisting of 7 new classrooms, Staff Resource areas, with new toilet facilities. All spaces utilise LED lighting, and are heated by LPHW via LST radiators. The building was generally ventilated by hybrid units, providing a mixture of natural and mechanical ventilation, with dedicated extract ventilation to toilet and kitchen areas.

Staff and teaching spaces are fitted with data and small power outlets as required, with domestic water services to all sanitary and catering appliances.
